Under the kitchen sink

Why not clean out under the kitchen sink today?

Begin by emptying the cabinet and finding a new home (which might include the trash) for anything not used in the kitchen. Measure the space beside and in front of the pipes, and shop (try shopping at home first) for right-size bins and baskets to fill it. Finally, give all survaces a good scrubbing and lay down a waterproof mat.

Now organize what is left.

Heavy-use items, like dish soap, get rock-star parking in a rack hanging on the door. OrganizedWorld.com has one for $17.99. Use a soap dish to hold a drippy brush.

Stick up a battery-powered light to illuminate dark corners.

A narrow two-tier basket makes the most of a sliver of space beside the drain pipe. Bonus: The top bin lifts off and the bottom one pulls out for easy access. I bought one at Walmart years ago. I have seen them at Bed, Bath, and Beyond. You can also find one for $20 at organizeit.com.

Keep cleaning supplies in a sturdy handled caddy. Limit this space to kitchen cleaners only; store the rest where they are used.

Catch recyclables in a small wastebasket. Get one that's shallow enough to fit in front of the disposal.

A mini whisk broom and dustpan set is handy for sweeping crumbs off the counter top or small messes off the floor. Stick it up with an adhesive hook.

Hang a dispenser and you'll be more likely to reuse those plastic bags. Once the dispenser if full, recycle any that come in your door. You do not need them at this time and you will accumulate more.

Store spare supplies, like sponges, scrubbers, and clothes out of their packaging to save space. You can use clear shoe drawers (the containerstore.com) to store these. They are water-resistant and stackable.

Obviously, you will not have room to implement all of these ideas. Decide what you need then choose whatever tips fit your needs. Have fun and enjoy your organized space.
